Shafiq smiles thinly.  ‘That’s not how we’d put it here.  We’re not so keen on Knights, or binding for that matter.  But yes, it’s true in your terms.’ 

‘But it’s a rogue device,’ says Jory.  ‘A renegade.  What’s the point of that?’ 

Shafiq sighs.  ‘All that means is that it falls outside your control.  It’s a point outside your Circle, that’s all.  And since I wasn’t welcome inside… well, what else was I to do?’  

‘Not that.  Really… just… not that.’
