‘Herne’s an actual legend though,’ Scar says. ‘Za looked him up. He’s no part of the Robin Hood story, but there are these proper stories about him. He’s even in some Shakespeare thing.’

‘The Merry Wives of Windsor,’ Zara says. She reads a lot of classics now her English is good enough. ‘He doesn’t appear, but he’s spoken about. Like Scar says, there have been stories for a long time. He’s said to be the ghost of an executed gamekeeper, but some people think he came from long before that, from one of the gods the old British legends talk about. ’ She’s picking her words carefully. There are, after all, no gods but Allah, and however she’s chosen to live her life she continues to believe that.
